Why is Christianity so disappointing?

uncommonpursuit.substack.com

What’s not to like about Christianity? Eternal life. Forgiveness of sins. Love poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit. A free gift received by faith. Jesus willingly gave his life to save us from our sin. Union with a Triune God of love. Friends at church.

Christianity announces good news.

So why do so many of our family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors experience Christianity as a disappointment?

If you ask that question - or some form of it - with a desire to listen, understand, and care (and not to start an argument or change someone’s mind), I believe you will have some great conversations.

I know an easy answer would be great, but the prompt to have a meaningful conversation might be what we need.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes in the comments.

I appreciate the title of this post and I have wondered if the word “western” were inserted before Christianity would it change the response? Would it impact our view of disappointment? It seems that where Christ is preached in the West He can be viewed as an addition to what I already have. But from a place of impoverishment and destitution He is known as complete gain because I had nothing to start with.

This is a great question, Carson. I plan to ask my un/believing family members if God has disappointed them.

I am so proud of you and the way you have deftly and astutely handled public forums and, more importantly, revered the Name of Christ. mb

Yes the western 'addition' is very relevant .. Try "How hard it is 4 the\we rich .. 2 reach heaven" (an avoided verse) .-(0r alll it's contemporaries)-.

Just scan the landscape .. & know the dis-ease that is a-foot.. (Maybe) some 30,000 denominations. . All . with their own ""christ"" written on by many _ but who reads such complainers just try Francis Schaffer..!! (0r,, A george barna poll)

...try yet \the half way church/ of my disaffected youth ..Kjv\.§oo. Bible _believing_ & we loved 2 preach from the book of Acts - but never functionally followed 1st Corinthians 11:1 (live like me)..or dare i say .. most any of the things Paul ever actually lived 4...

And what (discipleship) is known in the ranks . ?

Try a .. Come one - Come All ... And just believe "something" nice about (a nice god)

yes try even me [·as playing jacks·] on the battlefield .. 4 . 20+ Yrs ..!!..

Just read this 2day . Prayer is not preparation for the battle....IT IS THE Battle "... Leonard Ravenhill

I wish someone had told me that a few years back

OTHERS NEED TOLD

BUT again

who really listens

Haggai 1:5\7.. Malachi 1:6+.. 3:8.+.... 4:most...

Ezk 3:4--(7)--11\Acts 7:51\57\..13:46 \ Isaiah 53:1

Try new book 'what if jesus was serious' Yes - maybe he -the creator- even was just that ..!!
